Malawi’s emergence as one of the most complete tourist destinations in Africa is continuing to gather pace and 2026 looks like it will be another great year for the Warm Heart of Africa. Last year saw plenty of positive developments in the country, and this year promises even more. Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at achievements from 2025 and plans for 2026 that underpin this upward trajectory. As the sector looks ahead to 2026, companies are scaling up operations and refining experiences to meet growing demand for responsible, immersive travel in the Warm Heart of Africa.

In 2025, Land & Lake Safaris diversified its product offering with the launch of Lake Malawi diving tours accompanied by a qualified dive buddy, enabling both leisure diving and PADI certification. The company also became an official partner of the Lake of Stars Festival, offering a fully serviced camping package for festival-goers. Wellness tourism featured prominently with the first yoga retreat at Dzalanyama Forest Lodge, while infrastructure improvements included a new bar and upgraded kitchen at The Land & Lake Café in Lilongwe.
Transport capacity was strengthened through the addition of a Nissan X-Trail and Toyota Hilux for self-drive safaris, alongside upgraded camping gear and serviced mountain bikes for cycling tours. The company also refurbished its Lilongwe headquarters.
Looking ahead to 2026, Land & Lake Safaris will celebrate its 40th anniversary with special events and offers. Plans include reopening a refurbished chalet at Dzalanyama Forest Lodge, completing new school classrooms in the area, introducing new gap-year and “bucket list” travel programmes, expanding the self-drive fleet with another Toyota Hilux, and revamping its popular women-only tours to include more cultural and community experiences

1-2 Travel Africa strengthened its international profile in 2025 through features in European travel and outdoor media and by hosting Dutch travel journalists at Mitengo House and Africa House. These initiatives resulted in increased enquiries and bookings for 2026, particularly from the Netherlands.
The company continued its strong conservation and education focus through partnerships at Kuti Wildlife Reserve, supporting environmental education for local children and sponsoring internship programmes for Malawian students. Looking ahead to 2026, Crafted Africa have identified a number of developments across the properties they use around Malawi, including the return of the Mufasa Yacht for Lake charters, and new rooms at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde National Park.

for Malawi in 2024, SS Rent A Car managed to secure new vehicles, strengthening
its fleet across various categories. The addition of Toyota Corolla Cross SUVs,
Toyota Coaster 30-seat buses, and Toyota Axios to the compact saloon segment
reflects their commitment to offering reliable and comfortable transport
solutions. The company also upgraded its website to provide a more
user-friendly booking experience.
Looking ahead to 2025, SS
Rent A Car plans to expand its mini 4x4 segment with additional Suzuki Jimnys,
which have become popular among tourist couples. The large 4x4 segment will
also see growth with the introduction of 7- and 10-seat vehicles. The company
is exploring app development to streamline rental processes, aiming to overcome
challenges in Malawi’s current technological landscape.

In 2025, Orbis DMC launched a new website to improve customer experience and visibility, while signing partnership agreements with German travel agencies to attract group travel to Malawi. The company enhanced safety standards through first-aid training for staff and guides and expanded its freelance guide team to strengthen local expertise.
